Taking apart.
Reading again.

A date. A letter. A familiar shape. In Open Archive, signs of Qassim are broken into parts and placed beside one another.

The fragments retain something of where they came from, while their new arrangement opens another reading.

It began with a gift.

A pair of Nike Cortez from his mother began his interest in collecting shoes, as he told Arab News in 2023.

That relationship between an object and a personal memory is also a way into Open Archive.

Project note

Al-Qassim
القصيم

Open Archive begins with a place Mishari comes from: Qassim. The date is both an object and a point of recognition, set among fragments of Arabic typography.

Letters are broken across a grid of 25 archival cells. A date fruit occupies one cell as a symbol of Al-Qassim. Curves become shapes; dots become a rhythm. The familiar is still there, but it has to be read differently.

The work approaches nostalgia through rearrangement. Pieces of the past are brought into new relationships, making space for another meaning without losing their connection to place.
